Why this happens even when the image "looked fine"
A thumbnail preview is small — a slightly undersized image looks identical to a correctly-sized one at thumbnail scale, because both get scaled down to fit the preview anyway. The problem only shows up once the image is stretched up to fill a full screen instead of down to fit a small preview. A live or dynamic wallpaper — one that shifts subtly or responds to lock-screen widgets — has its own resolution and framing considerations beyond a static image, since parts of the frame get covered by clock widgets, notifications, and the time display in ways a static wallpaper preview doesn't show. Checking a dynamic wallpaper on the actual lock screen, with widgets enabled, catches overlap issues that a plain image preview simply can't reveal.
